Opinion:

The state of Pennsylvania has denied as many as eight of every 10 applications for cash welfare in 2013.  Compared to other years, this is a major increase in people that were turned down.
The increased rate of denials is because before Pennsylvanians apply for welfare, they now have to looks for at least three jobs and record their effort for seeking work.  Rochelle Jackson, a  public policy advocate said, "It's about punishing the poor for needing assistance by adding another hurdle for welfare."  I think that it is good that Pennsylvania as well as other states are requiring people to go job searching 3 times before they apply for welfare.  It could help because it will limit the amount of people who go on welfare because some people are too lazy to go job searching and other people may get a job while searching and wont have to apply anyway.  I think that this change in the system was a good idea and I think that it will help benefit people who really cant get jobs.

  1. I think that this policy is a good policy. While I do not think that everyone who applies for welfare is lazy, I know that there are people who will always try to take advantage of the system. It appears to me that this gets rid of the freeloaders.

  2. I agree with you and don't think that another hurdle is a bad thing. By forcing people to try first, they have incentive to do so and may actually get a job and not be a burden on the system. Also, unemployment assistance would cover a person for the time that they would spend looking for work before they got on welfare.

  3. This is a fantastic idea. Way too many people are taking advantage of the welfare system. I personally think more people should be turned down. I've seen statistics showing as much as 7/10 people in some areas being on welfare when they don't need to be. This is also the governments fault for being so lenient with the program.

  4. Agree with the program. People "should" be dong this already anyway, so adding the recording requirement allows the state to save money by cutting down on fraudulent claims and helps it to better direct money to those who have explored other options and have been unable to support themselves without welfare.

  5. Everyone has an opportunity to not be poor (at least in America they do), and punishing them for not taking that opportunity is fine by me. It makes sense to provide another hurdle. Welfare is a privilege, and it should be treated as such.

  6. I agree with this. The goal of welfare should not be to provide a permanent income for unemployed citizens, but to provide a safety net in tough economic times. While I do not support any entitlement spending whatsoever, I think that these new regulations should help shrink programs like Welfare over time.
